For a forum website dedicated to high technology discussions and related certifications there's sure a lot of paranoia amongst everyone.

The military already has satellites that can read newspaper print from orbit. If we're all so concerned about "big brother" knowing where we are at all times then you should move into a cave somewhere and run your Commodore 64 pc off a gas powered generator. Laughing

I wish it was as easy for me to just give up and pretend that everything was normal as you have...

Like I alluded to earlier, just because things are bad doesn't mean we should accept them... Nor does it mean that we should accept further infringements on our liberties.

Yes, there probably are satellites tracking us already, does that mean that you will be the first in line to get implanted?

Do you care at all?

good thing i don't own a cell, really no need for it unless your in an accident or almost got killed. Either way you might be able to borrow somebody else's that you got in an accident with or use the phone at the hospital so all is well on that end, cellphones = useless (personal use wise and if you got one at work you shouldn't be worried about being tracked its their equipment)

Also they have or had rfid chips in the newer 20 dollar bills, it was found by truckers after they noticed alarms in stores were going off for them so they put them in microwave and it burned a hole in it around the eye area. Big thing a few years ago.

However, as far as I am aware RFID chips can only be scanned by a receiver within 6-10ft away

If that is true, then why do the Federal Express commercials claim that they can track their packages in the middle of the desert with RFID?

While you're at it, why not give a dollar to some homeless person downtown since there are thousands of them living in pdx and that is a slightly more local and important thing to concern yourself over.

I give much more than my fair share to charity because I know that government welfare programs don't work. And while, just last week I gave a homeless guy $20, I don't believe that is as important as the direction this country is headed...

And I also do not own a cell phone... Smile

If you've ever looked up a tracking number for FedEx or UPS online you will only see the specific points where the package was scanned into or out of a FedEx office. There is no live information and if they say that in their advertising they're lying.

In any event, it is a pointless argument because I agree that the government will use whatever means at their disposal to locate someone, if they so desire.
I just don't think RFID is a concern at this point. At least not until the technology advances a bit more.

As a total newbie here I am certainly not going to get into a flaming match with the owner of the site. Very Happy
For the sake of a peace offering I will properly kiss a little butt and say that this is one of the better IT Forum sites I've ever seen online.[/quote]

The government can already track anybody they want to. BUT they don't have the time or interest to spy on any regular person, you have to be flagged. Keep out of trouble and you're not on their screen. Pretty simple. Ie. they can have a satellite monitoring phone calls via speech recognition to listen for terrorist related conversation, that doesn't mean there is a set of ears in a government building to listen to EVERY call. One their bot picks up a red flag, it gets individual attention.

Executive branch to EFF: We're above the law - Executive branch to EFF: We're above the law

I know there is no such thing as "Checks and balances" its just some BS taught to us in school but you'd think if they forced the schools to teach us this they might try to follow it a little Confused

But what determines a "red flag" in the first place? This is what is most disconcerning when dealing with the government. Does it mean that if I send an email to someone talking about how much I don't like the current administration I get the "red flag" on my file? Does it mean that if I protest an action by our government over the Internet I get a "red flag?"

Hell, this post could be the very thing that gets me a "red flag" in the first place. Smile
